Be Part of the Election Process

Elections don’t happen by themselves. Behind every ballot cast and every candidate’s campaign is a network of people who give their time, energy, and skills. Volunteering is the backbone of local democracy. Whether you’re greeting voters at a polling station or helping a candidate share their message, your involvement makes the process possible.

Support Your Municipality

Municipalities are currently recruiting volunteers for many roles that ensure the election runs smoothly and fairly. These may include:

  • Polling station support – greeting voters, checking names off the voter list, handing out ballots, and assisting with accessibility needs.

  • Logistical support – helping prepare voting locations, setting up booths, or ensuring signage and instructions are clear for voters.

  • Advance polls and counting – assisting with early voting days and helping ensure ballots are counted correctly and securely.

By volunteering with your municipality, you’ll be directly contributing to the integrity of the election. Contact your local town office to ask about open positions.

Support a Candidate

Democracy is also driven by community voices stepping forward to run for council. Every candidate needs support to share their vision. Volunteering for a campaign might include:

  • Knocking on doors and introducing the candidate to residents

  • Helping with communications — posters, phone calls, social media, or newsletters

  • Organizing campaign events like meet-and-greets or community forums

  • Offering behind-the-scenes help with paperwork, scheduling, and data entry

Campaign volunteering is a chance to stand beside someone whose values you believe in and to be part of shaping the conversation in your town.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering in elections is more than just lending a hand. It’s a learning experience and a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself. Here are a few of the benefits:

  • A front-row seat to democracy in action — see how decisions that affect your community begin.

  • Skill-building opportunities — learn about communications, event planning, community engagement, and leadership.

  • Connections and friendships — meet like-minded people in your community who share a passion for making a difference.

  • A stronger voice for your town — your involvement shows that residents care deeply about the democratic process.

Every hour you give contributes to a stronger, healthier democracy in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Stories from the Ground

Across the province, volunteers have always been at the heart of elections. In many small towns, it’s the same people who coach the hockey team or run the church supper who step up to help run the vote. Their dedication ensures that, come election day, neighbours can gather at the local hall, cast their ballots, and know that their voices count. By volunteering, you’re continuing a proud tradition of service and community spirit.

How to Get Involved

  1. Reach out to your town office – ask what roles they are looking to fill for the upcoming election.

  2. Approach a candidate – if someone is running who inspires you, offer to join their campaign team.

  3. Spread the word – encourage others in your community to volunteer, too. The more people involved, the stronger the process becomes.

Local democracy doesn’t run on its own. It runs on the energy of people who care enough to step forward. Your town needs you — whether at the polls, on a campaign, or simply lending a hand. Be part of the team that makes the 2025 municipal elections possible.
