Hi my name is Shelley Lovell and I live in Lamaline on the south coast of Newfoundland. If I were a municipal councillor, I would regularly have town hall meetings and urge all residents of the town to come and voice their concerns or ideas to improve life here. I would take note of each persons suggestions and try my best to make them a reality. Municpal councils do run on ideas, however, they shouldn’t run on the ideas of councillors alone, rather, they also need ones from the people living in the community as well.

The first thing I would consider looking at would be long term strategic planning. It seems long term planning is something that is not a focus of many town councils, I feel this is due to the high turnover of councillors. I feel as many towns and cities are expanding at an alarming rate there is little thought going into the locations of residential and commercial developments. Town’s are growing so fast, that many of them are just giving the go ahead for huge land developments without thinking of the consequences, and wanting to land that business within their boundaries. As a young person myself, I want to be sure cities and municipalities are growing with young peoples interests in mind. Leaving land for future residential developments, and land for parks and recreational areas. Once the land is handed over to the developer, it is gone. We need councillors making sure the land is being used to its full potential. Land is limited, we need to keep that in mind.

If I were a municipal councillor I would make my mark by getting a youth center for Makkovik, NL. There is not much for the children and teens to do here because we are a small community, so many of them drink and do drugs. I think a youth center would stop that from happening here. It would give the youth a place to hang out and play games, board games, video games, pool etc. I think we need to take care of the youth as they are our future.

I feel the simplest way to make our mark on our communities is for each individual householder to go beyond their property boundaries and take care of the grounds around them. If everyone could do this, our communities would be a lot cleaner and prettier. I know this solution is too simple to be award winning but our communities would be winners which is most important.

Corner brook has Marble Mtn drawing tourists and locals during the winter, but not much happens in the summer. Rather than having people go out of province, or even just to Pasadena beach to feel some sand, why could we not have people coming to spend a day or more at the beach in Corner brook?. Wellington street got sand for volleyball. It would take a few truckloads to Bowater park or somewhere and we would have it for locals and summertime tourists.

St. John’s would be a better community if the city provided more incentive for home and business owners to create their own energy. This could be done by small wind turbine development and solar panels.
